All About James Lloyd and the Christian Media Network®

The unauthorized biography by Craig Portwood

As I drove down the long driveway, I had no idea that 3000 miles away, an amateurish, ineffectual plot, was being hatched by Ralph and Kathy Haaff. Ralph was about to set out on a "Special OP's Mission"; To seek out and neutralize or destroy all enemies.

• Special target; "Pretenders".

• Mission #1: to "expose" Craig Portwood as a "pretender", and a traitor to the Christian Media Network® cause at any cost;

• Mission #2: to procure personal honor and glory.

If his plans are by any means discovered, James Lloyd will disavow any knowledge of his actions. "These instructions will self destruct in 5 seconds. Good luck Ralph "

Ralph Haaff's secret mission may have been compromised on the first day of the conference, Friday, May 31, by Rick Walters (whom we will see, would not be fully in Ralph's confidence for another 3 months).

Walters related to me that Ralph would attend the conference on the Sabbath (Saturday) in secret for a few hours, hiding in the woods near the shelter, to "spy out pretenders"  I was told that Ralph wanted to keep it quiet and, not yet knowing that I was the target, I did so.

Why was Ralph Haaff HIDING in the darkness? The Bible has the answer:

John 3:19:

Ralph knew what he was doing when he stalked those who attended the gathering. He hid because he knew his deeds were evil. 

Secret Agent Ralph Haaff, along with his wife Kathy, would soon begin a campaign of spiritual sabotage, hard at work planting stories, passing gossip, and causing dissention in the body of Christ, all in the name of the Holy Spirit of God. According to David Carrico, similar thing had occurred a year earlier at the First Clifty Falls Conference.

That Friday of course, I could not yet know of the clumsy trap which was being carefully laid for me. There was a  brief gathering at the Oak Grove Shelter, at Clifty Falls State Park, in Madison Indiana, and I did my last Beacon of Truth broadcast on Christian Media Network® at 5:00 EDT, May 31st, 2002, while at the park.

After the meeting had broken up for the day, a group of us decided to go out to dinner. Mexican food was decided upon, and 12 of us went to the Tapatio Mexican Restaurant at 730 Clifty Dr, Madison, IN 47250, conveniently located in front of the hotel, where Linda and I had met a day earlier, and where we were both staying.

The sordid stories which Ralph and Kathy Haaff spun about this dinner were expected to be Ralph's Bombshell.

There were a dozen people present, and it was a marvelous time of fellowship. It had ended too quickly, as I could not stay long, having been invited by James Lloyd, and Rick Walters, to do a 3 hour broadcast with Walters that evening. After having some difficulty finding Rick's house on 8282 North Middlefork Road in DuPont, I joined him for the broadcast, which ended about 1:00am local time.

All in all, it had been a long day. I went back to my room, and went to sleep, ready to face an even longer day.

On the following day, a Sabbath, I arrived at the park in the late morning. Linda followed behind me, bringing refreshments.

Aside from the Christian Media®  merchandise which James Lloyd insisted be brought to the conference, it bore no resemblance to a Christian Media® sponsored affair. There was no "passing of the hat" (which always occurs twice during each James Lloyd "performance"), nor any other solicitation for funds.  While slanders were made about her and behind her back, Linda worked with her daughter to organize some games for the children of those who had come to the event, and prizes were handed out.

The adults mingled for awhile, and a brief address was made. Speakers that day included Rick Walters, Ralph and Kathy Haaff (Pictured Right), and (Pictured Left) Kirke Wise, (who also did a live remote from the event on his Saturday Show). There were other speakers as well such as John and Diane Hinton (who had a very interesting testimony), Linda Kristich, (who spoke on the how's and why's of home schooling), and myself of course. Each speaker was video recorded by Rick Walters, and digital audio was captured by Kirke Wise. Many in attendance had cameras as well.

How much time Ralph Haaff spent hiding in the woods that morning cannot be ascertained. When he did show himself at the shelter on June 1st, he did not introduce himself to anyone, instead choosing to stand quietly on the sidelines wearing dark glasses (So that nobody might see his eyes, just like the "Real Spies" do).

When it was his "turn" to address those assembled, his address was vague, and rambling, and it was difficult to understand exactly what (if anything) he was trying to say. All we know for sure is that he told a story about his wife finding "something" he had in his closet that he shouldn't have had. Aside from learning of Kathy's habit of searching Ralph's closet, and the likelihood of her finding something of the flesh which belongs to her husband, there was no message.

The only notable moment was at the beginning, and was pure Ralph. In a fit of dramatic piety, he pounded a rock down on the table which was before him and challenging the audience said "let he who is without sin, cast the first stone".

This was all the more remarkable in the hindsight of the passage of time. For all his theatrics while in the limelight, HE was the individual who cast the FIRST STONE AGAINST ME from the shadows! His carefully rehearsed demonstration shows only the depth of his hypocrisy. What gall! I still marvel that he could put on such a performance, and not feel ashamed. It was amazing.

While everyone else was mingling, the Haaff's were pulling people aside individually, telling them that there was "something going on between Craig and Linda", and doing it in the guise of "ministering" . The Bible calls this using "liberty for a cloke of maliciousness". 1st Peter 2:16

Please keep in mind through all these accusations, that Linda and I HAD JUST MET!

One individual who had the courage to come forward with her testimony, was a woman who had been mentioned in  Chapter 24, Mary Jo. Like the others, Mary Jo was pulled aside by Kathy Haaff,  being told of the Haaff's "concern", and told that Linda and I were having an "Adulterous" relationship. Mary Jo told Kathy that she noticed that we did sit together at the Mexican Restaurant just the night before, but that she did not see anything unusual.

Soon, Ralph and Kathy would be telling everyone that Mary Jo reported that she saw Linda and myself "carrying on" in a "Chinese Restaurant". In a few months, not only would this story be repeated on international shortwave radio, but it would be published as well by James Lloyd on the internet, and reported as verified fact. Mary Jo has since been called a liar by the same people who use her name to support their falsehood!

Please continue to keep in mind through all these accusations, that Linda and I HAD JUST MET!

Welcome to "REMNANT CHRISTIANITY".

Even though James Lloyd is bold enough to publish a report denouncing me for shameful behavior in this "Chinese" Restaurant, he has been timid when asked to offer proof, and has not named any witness to the event, because he does not know for certain who WAS there. He does know however, that he is lying.

You don't have to be Dick Tracy to realize that, If his story WERE true, Ralph could have asked me directly about what Mary Jo said to him, AND SETTLED THIS right there at the conference. Of course that wouldn't suit Ralph's agenda would it? How would he be able to "build a case" against me if he tried it in the open? He couldn't.

It would have to be done IN SECRET.

How can a man even consider taking covert action, if his personal affairs are above board and honorable? After all, you cannot be honest while you are lying now can you? Nonetheless, that fabrication was minor compared to the whopper of a lie he later told me.

For months I had been trying without success, to get Ralph to agree to come to the Clifty Falls Gathering.  I asked what had changed his mind. turning to me he said, "The Holy Spirit told me to come here." and also " I was told to watch...I asked 'watch for what' and he said 'just watch.'..." Later it was admitted that James Lloyd and not the Holy Spirit,  had encouraged Haaff to go to the conference.

Consider Lloyd's claim:

This admission was made AFTER he denied talking to Ralph about me at all. It is unlikely that the pontificating, long winded James Lloyd would be so terse. It is also unlikely that the Haaff's (neither of them being too bright) would be able to concoct the story that they did without some direction from James Lloyd.

Ralph either confused James Lloyd for the Holy Spirit, or HE LIED TO ME IN THE NAME OF THE HOLY SPIRIT!

How many times do you get to lie in the name of the Holy Spirit of God  before you are cast off? What kind of spirit would one have to be influenced by to even consider doing that?

 Linda herself offered to pay for a hotel room for Ralph and Kathy Haaff, 2 weeks before the conference began. When he later accused us of "hanky-panky", he was reminded of Linda's generous act. After all, how was it possible that Linda and I "...came to Clifty Falls to lust after each other..." as Ralph and Kathy Haaff accuse, if she was willing to provide an opportunity to "chaperone" by getting the a room in the same Hotel?

"Why would she do that Ralph" I asked him when we last spoke (September 2002). He replied "It was a bribe". Keep in mind, that her offer to pay for their lodging was made 2 weeks before the gathering. That means that Haaff had already made his plans to cause dissention long before the event. It was not some spontaneous spiritual understanding which led him there, but the prospect of tasting "blood".

It is also interesting to note that this was the same time period (2 weeks before the event) when I shared my plans with Lloyd. It would appear that Lloyd began to gossip immediately, and Ralph ran with the ball James Lloyd had provided. 

Yet Another Inept Plot

As the day grew later, Kathy suggested taking a group picture. I stood in the group, and Kathy began to direct my pose. "Craig...stand next to Linda", "...get closer...", "Now put your arm around her...". At the time of course, I trusted them as brethren and friends.

I would only discover later, that this was another unsophisticated attempt to "frame me", by providing "proof" that there was an unwholesome affair taking place in everyone's midst.  I would never suspect these people who greeted me with a kiss, would even consider doing such a thing. Welcome once again to "Remnant" Christianity!

In the finest tradition of a cult, this photo was circulated amongst Christian Media Network® supporters, to prove that I had "fallen away from the faith". It was of course, (clumsily) edited to delete the group context of the shot, and presented as an "intimate moment" between the two of us.

Of course while all of this is going on, James Lloyd speaks out of the other side of his mouth. A perfect example of Lloyd's HYPE-ocrisy  appeared in his attack upon me (which will be examined in great detail in the future).

What is interesting to me about this, is that with all the video recorded by Rick Walters, and the digital audio, captured by Kirke Wise, and with all the cameras that were at the event, why was this heavily edited photo the only evidence they had? Certainly they had access to those other "proofs". Where are they?

Later, in what could now be called a prophetic question, I asked Ralph Jokingly, "So when are you going to begin to try and expose me". Ordinarily Ralph would have gone along with the joke, but this time he lost his composure, along with his grin. Taken off his guard, he replied excitedly, "You said that, not me!" 

His statement was curious at the time, but in the context of events already transpired, revealing. By his exclamation, he provided a "bench mark" statement. While being thrown an innocent, silly remark, the "Secret Agent Man from UNCLE/007 guy" had shown his hand, and now it would only be a matter of time before the evidence of what Ralph and Kathy were doing, would come to light. He had been "BUSTED", and would now be found out completely in time.

Truth is a VERY stubborn thing.

That knowledge however, did not translate into repentance for the Haaff's, but instead, an obsession: The obsession to bury me with slander and accusation before the truth about the Haaff's foul deeds could become known.

There were no doubt other plots afoot at the time, in a simultaneous effort to cast aspersions upon my character, which I failed to notice. There would be others to come.

One might reasonably ask, why did Ralph make such a great effort (albeit a lame one) to "frame" me? Aside from his habit of promoting strife and seeking perennial confrontation, what personal interest would Ralph and Kathy Haaff, have in doing all this? And why would James Lloyd help them try and ruin someone who had served him so loyally, when most others did not? I sought the answer to that question for some time.
